The City Theatre of Gjilan was founded in 1944. It mainly functioned with amateur actors. Since 1971 when Muharrem Shahiqi, a renowned actor, having been educated in Skopje, came and started working at the theatre together with Fetah Mehmeti, a director educated in theatre directing at the University of Belgrade, the theatre has been functioning as a professional theatre. It is publicly owned and is the only theatre in the Municipality of Gjilan. (English)
